Chris Kaman’s thoughts and opinions on the coaching change, and how he feels about Kim Hughes becoming head coach.
I always like hearing Chris Kaman being interviewed, because he likes to speak his mind and isn’t afraid of being too upfront and revealing about his true feelings. What we can gather from Kaman’s interview is that he is legitimately happy for Kim Hughes being coach. At one point you think he’s going to say that he feels sorry for Dunleavy- but instead he says that he’s very excited to see how this is going to unfold. Other things I noticed… (keep reading)
Other things I noticed- they asked Kaman if he wants Hughes to be the permanent coach, and he answered by saying that yes, he wants Hughes to be the permanent coach- BUT because he’s Kaman’s buddy. I can assume from this that Kaman knows there are better coaches available out there, but the fact that he likes Kim Hughes will make him more enthusiastic about this whole coaching change.
That’s a very good thing- because sometimes it’s not how good the coach is, it’s how much the players want to play for him. Dunleavy was a pretty bad coach, but the reason the Clippers were doing bad was because they didn’t want to play for him anymore- they gave up on him. Even if Dunleavy was an excellent coach and players didn’t want to play for him, it wouldn’t have ended up well I guarantee you.
Although Kaman doesn’t like to run, I like that he defended Hughes’ style of running more- he even used the Lakers 3 peat dynasty as an analogy. Then he laughed it off when reporters asked him if he thinks he’s really as good as Shaq in those days. Again, you see how much Kaman wants to play for Hughes because he’s even defending the playing style that Hughes brings- one that people would be concerned about (thinking Kaman would not want to participate in it)
